Celebrate the New Year on Deep Creek Lake!

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is behind us and that all of the presents are unwrapped and holiday decorations will soon be put away.  It’s been a wonderful holiday season here on Deep Creek Lake with many fun events and ways to soak in the spirit of Christmas!

With the New Year quickly approaching, you may find yourself hosting the last big party of the year in your Deep Creek Lake home.  New Year’s Eve can be a fun time to gather one last time with loved ones who’ve come to visit over the holidays, or to enjoy time with friends and neighbors you’ve come to know while living or vacationing on Deep Creek Lake.

Hosting a New Years’ Eve party or dinner can be a fun way to end the year, but can also be overwhelming if you’re trying to get everything ready after just finishing up the holiday festivities.  Here are just a few ways to quickly prepare your home for your New Years’ Eve guests, create a welcoming environment and to make it a great evening for everyone!

1. Focus on First Impressions- Make sure the front of your home is just as inviting as the interior.  Create a well defined walkway for guests. Make the entrance welcoming by sweeping off the front porch, adding a touch of holiday color with garland or potted plants, and making sure it’s well lit at night.
2. Create Guest Space- Before guests arrive, clear out space in your coat closet for guests coats and have a mat for shoes.  If loved ones are staying with you in your home, prepare the bedrooms and guests bathrooms so that you can enjoy time with friends and family instead of rushing to get things ready.
3. Be Superficial- If you’re hosting guests for an evening, don’t worry about cleaning every nook and cranny of your home.  Quickly wipe down the guest bathroom, vacuum or sweep the main areas and don’t worry about the rest that guests won’t see!
4. Cool Off- An hour or so before guests arrive, be sure to turn down the thermostat.  With more people in a room and the oven or stove on; things can quickly heat up and you don’t want anyone to overheat.
5. Safely Light Up- Candles are a great way to add a cozy appeal to your home through the sight of flickering flames and holiday scents.  Be sure to keep an eye on the candles throughout the evening and put them in a place where children can’t reach them or they can’t be knocked over.
If you are planning on hosting a New Years’ Eve Party in your Deep Creek Lake home, we hope these tips give you a few ideas for added success!  You may also be wondering what you can do to start the new year off right.  Why not enjoy the annual First Day Hike at Deep Creek State Park?  Here are a few details.
First Day Hike at Deep Creek State Park
January 1 from 2-4pm

Create Beautiful Curb Appeal for your Deep Creek Lake Home this Winter!

Now that the holidays are in full swing on Deep Creek Lake, we’re beginning to feel the chill of winter settling in.  While we’ve had a mild holiday season so far, the snowflakes we saw this morning could be a good indication of what's around the corner!

The winter season is always a fun time of year here on Deep Creek Lake with endless activities to enjoy.  If you live in your home on Deep Creek Lake year round, or you’re planning on being here for Christmas; chances are you’ll be spending time with friends and family in your home.

But, before you settle in to your cozy nights by the fire telling memories of Christmas past or prior to hosting the loved ones on Christmas day, you’ll want to be sure to make your home as appealing as possible!  Here are a few tips we, here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, gathered to make sure you don’t forget your homes’ exterior this holiday season!

1. Safety- You may have friends and family planning to visit soon, so you’ll want to put safety first! Be sure your driveway, sidewalk and front porch are cleared of debris or any snow. It’s always better to be on the cautious side and put down salt, as even rain can freeze and make walking up to your home dangerous.

2. A Neat Lawn- Whether there is snow covering your lawn or not; be sure to keep your lawn free from any leaves, twigs, etc… that may have blown through with the harsher winds. Just because your lawn is not expected to be as lush as the summer months, doesn’t mean to ignore the state of your lawn. Keeping it cleaned up will show that you care.

3. Tasteful Decorations- While you can have fun with the season’s bright lights and characters of Christmas, it can be easy for some to get carried away. Try small white lights around your homes’ bushes or front porch post, a simple wreath and garland to enhance your home’s appearance without being too distracting.

4. Fresh Paint- Your Deep Creek Lake home is more visible in the winter months as trees are free from their leaves and your home’s condition is more exposed. Touching up chipped or faded paint is a great way to help your Deep Creek Lake home look refreshed.

5. Clean Gutters- It’s not too late to make sure your gutters are free from leaves and other debris. You’ll want these cleared so that melting snow or rain can easily run through the gutters and not cause damage.

6. Lighting- The use of lights can really make your home stand out with the shorter winter days. Since there is more time without the suns light, using a variety of lighting can give your home a warm glow. Indoor window lights in each room provides a nice appeal, while lights along the pathway up to your home, a bright porch light and tasteful Christmas lights are all ways in which to enhance your Deep Creek Lake homes’ curb appeal.

7. Cold Weather Plants- Hearty plants and Evergreen trees can withstand the winter months while adding visual appeal to the outside of your home. Evergreen Holly will add a splash of color with its red berries and can stand up to the cold weather.

These are also great tips if you’re trying to sell your Deep Creek Lake home this holiday season!  The first impression of your home’s curb appeal can make all the difference! Even if you just act on a few of these tips; you’ll be glad you went the extra mile to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for your guests or potential buyers!

As always, please feel free to let us know how we can help you with your Deep Creek Real Estate needs!

3 Great Reasons to Consider Buying a Deep Creek Lake Home This Holiday Season!

This is a bustling time of year with holiday shopping, parties and gathering together with family and friends. So, with your festive schedule, buying a home during the holiday season may be the last thing on your list.  But, if you’re considering buying a Deep Creek Lake home whether as a permanent residence or vacation home, now could be the ideal time to do so!

As Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agents here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, we are seeing some great homes currently on the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market!  In fact, you may be visiting our blog to get an idea of what buying a home would be like this time of year.  Below are just a few key reasons you might want to jump at the chance of buying a Deep Creek Lake home this holiday season.

1. Lower Prices- With the lack of people searching during the holidays for a home on Deep Creek Lake; prices soften a bit. You can view our website to see a list of the homes currently available on Deep Creek Lake!  You’ll notice these homes are priced to sell and are a great deal for buyers.

2. Less Competition- Many buyers don’t think to take advantage of house hunting during the holidays, so you’re sure to avoid any bidding wars that would occur at a peak point on the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market. This will mean a less stressful home buying experience for you!

3. Motivated Sellers- Sellers dread not being able to sell their homes due to the holiday season. They’re very aware that most are not in the market to buy a home until Spring rolls around, which means, more often than not; they’re motivated. They know showings of their home will greatly decrease, so any activity on their home is good news. Oftentimes they’re willing to come down on the price or be flexible with closing dates, and other extras.

If you are interested in talking more about buying a Deep Creek Lake home this holiday season or are ready to begin your home search; please let us know!  We would be happy to show you the homes that meet your needs, style and budget and to walk you through the home buying process.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Host an Eco Friendly Party this Holiday Season!

We hope you enjoyed a great Thanksgiving last weekend with family and friends!  Whether you were here celebrating on Deep Creek Lake or are hoping to spend Thanksgiving next year in your new Deep Creek Lake home; this is a great time to remember all we have for which to be thankful.

A few weeks ago, we talked about ways you can go green in your home during the cold weather season.  It’s important that we all do our part to keep Deep Creek Lake a beautiful place to live or vacation and each one of us doing our part can make a big difference!  If you’re going to be hosting friends and family this season for holiday gatherings, we thought we’d point out a few ways that you can host an environmentally friendly party in your Deep Creek Lake home!  Take a look!

1. No-Cook Dishes- Save energy and give your oven a rest by preparing dishes that don’t have to be cooked. Think: salads, fruit dishes, veggie dips, yogurts and much more!  You’ll find yourself being more creative and spending less time in the kitchen!
2. Buy Local- Shopping locally from farmers and other various growers for ingredients for your holiday party (or any time!) is a great way to cut down on our carbon footprint as well as help support sustainable growing around Deep Creek Lake and surrounding areas.
3. Nix the Microwave- As much as possible, reheat or cook items in the oven or on the stove.  Certain plastics can produce harmful fumes when put in the microwave and, while not overtly harmful, microwaves do leak radiation.  It’s just better for your health and for the environment to use other options as often as you can!
4. Reusable Towels- When cleaning up after your holiday party; be sure to use reusable towels instead of paper towels.  Microfiber towels will hold on to dust, dirt and food particles since the fibers act like a magnet.  After cleanup, throw them in the wash and you’ll be able to reuse them over and over!
5. Switch to Convection- Now, we don’t expect that you’ll run out and buy a new oven before your holiday party, but this is something to consider for the very near future!  Switch from a conventional oven to a convection oven.  The difference?  A convection oven continually circulates heated air, which means food cooks more quickly and reduces energy usage by 20%!  Imagine being able to prepare food faster and save on energy- all from one appliance!
6. Cloth Napkins- These “things of the past” are making a comeback!  The average American will use around 2,200 paper napkins per year- which are never recycled!  Using cloth napkins will cut down drastically on waste and will make any event feel more special.
7. Chill Out- Be sure to put a pitcher of water in your fridge at least an hour before your party to ensure it’s completely chilled.  Those that prefer water won’t have to stand at your sink and let the water run until it gets cold.  The average kitchen faucet flows at a gallon per minute!  Thinking ahead can help to chill water before will reduce the waste that a running faucet will produce!
8. Glass Containers- Storing leftovers or dried foods in glass containers with lids are much safer than the plastic alternative.  When heated, certain plastics can break down and put chemicals into your food.  Learn more about harmful and safe plastics.
9. Fill the Dishwasher- To avoid wasting water and energy, be sure to have a full load each time you use your dishwasher.  Surprisingly, new energy efficient dishwasher can be more eco-friendly than washing dishes by hand!  Be sure to air dry and skip the pre-rinse cycle as most newer models are effective enough to get your dishes clean without the added step!
As Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agents here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, our goal is to provide you with tips and advice on getting the most out of the Deep Creek Lake lifestyle and we hope these ideas help!
We are always here to help with your real estate needs by answering questions about buying or selling a home on Deep Creek Lake, or any other real estate questions you may have.

Boost Your Home's Selling Appeal this Holiday Season!

If your Deep Creek Lake home is currently on the market, you may be worried about selling your home during the holiday season.  You fear that buyers aren’t looking and that you won’t be able to enjoy decorating for the season because you need to sell your home.

As a team of experienced Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agents here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, we wanted to give those of you who are selling some encouragement!  Oftentimes, buyers will look at homes on the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market during the holidays because they know there will be less competition than in the spring.  Also, decorating your home for the holidays can be just the thing to help buyers envision themselves gathered with loved ones in the home!

Here are just a few ways you can highlight your home this holiday season as you show your home to potential buyers!

1. Give Warmth- Just before a showing, be sure to turn up your thermostat a few degrees to make it extra toasty inside.  Prospective buyers will be thankful for the change from Maryland’s cold winters.  Put a fire in the fireplace to add an extra sense of warmth and highlight the cozy atmosphere that this feature of your home can bring.

2. Mind the Tree- While a tall Christmas tree can showcase a two story living room, be sure to be careful of the tree’s width.  The last thing you want is to have your Deep Creek Lake home appear smaller than it really is.  Also, you’ll want to stick with a cohesive theme for your ornaments.  The family homemade ornaments may be meaningful to you, but can quickly make your tree look gaudy to outsiders. Keep it simple this year and remember, there’s always next year when you can display those keepsakes in your new home!

3. Complement Your Décor- You’ll want to make sure that your Christmas decoration palette matches or complements your current décor.  If the colors clash or seem to be fighting for attention, this can be very distracting to buyers and can take away from the great features of your home you’re trying to highlight.

4. Highlight the Highlights- Draw attention to a beautiful fireplace mantle with a few tasteful ornaments or enhance an arched doorway with hanging mistletoe.

5. Go Light on the Lights- An abundance of outdoor lights can leave Deep Creek Lake buyers wondering what the front of your home looks like.  And, while you may love your giant inflatable lawn ornaments; it may be best to leave those in storage this year.  Everyone has different tastes and you don’t want buyers to be met at your home with a sense of “tacky.”

6. Add Holiday Adornments- Again, you don’t want to go overboard, but a simple evergreen wreath, a poinsettia center piece or hot cider simmering on the stove can create a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.  Of course it’s best to avoid overly religious flourishes as this can be off-putting to some.

7. Offer Tasty Treats- While you don’t want to come across as trying to bribe buyers, everyone loves holiday treats and having a plate full of cookies and candy can make the home showing a little sweeter.  Hot chocolate and apple cider are always welcome and buyers will feel that you have their best interest in mind.

While these tips won’t guarantee that you’ll sell your Deep Creek Lake home this holiday season, they will boost your chances!  If you’re still concerned about selling your home this year, but know that it’s necessary to do so, please feel free to contact us!

We understand that going through the selling process can seem daunting, but with an experienced Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agent by your side; you’ll find selling your home can be a smooth and efficient experience.  We would love to help you get your Deep Creek Lake home sold!

Save Energy & Go Green in Your Deep Creek Lake Home!

It’s hard to believe we’re in the month of November and that the holiday season is just around the corner!  As we enter into the cooler months here on Deep Creek Lake, we find ourselves ready for evenings cozied up by the fire with family and friends in our Deep Creek Lake home.

For those of you who currently own a Deep Creek Lake home, or you’ve visited our shores for a great vacation, you know that Deep Creek Lake is committed to keeping its surroundings as natural and beautiful as possible.  While our community is active in being as eco-friendly as possible; we can all do our part.

As Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agents here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, we are always helping buyers find their ideal home and go through the home buying process with ease.  But, we also want to help buyers keep their homes in great condition and make them aware of how to go green in their own home!  Here are a few tips that can make a big difference during the cold weather season.

1. Use Your Fireplace- It’s amazing how a fire in your fireplace can heat up a room instantly! Consider lowering your thermostat on cooler evenings and lighting a fire instead. You’ll instantly feel cozier in the midst of Maryland’s chilly winters.

2. Unplug- Not using an appliance? Unplug it! The Department of Energy notes that, even if appliances are not being used, they are still using energy. 40% of electricity used for your home electronics is used when they’re turned off, but still plugged in. Getting in the habit of unplugging will prove to be a smart habit in the long run!

3. Program Your Thermostat- Setting your thermostat to lower temperatures while you’re away from your Deep Creek Lake home or while you’re sleeping will automatically help reduce energy used, as well as costs!

4. Prevent Leaks- Check all doors and windows for drafts. You can easily seal windows and doors to prevent the warm air from your Deep Creek Lake home escaping while making sure the cool air doesn’t leak in!

5. Use the Sun- During the day, be sure to leave blinds and curtains open to let in the sunlight and natural heat. At night, shut them to help “trap” the warmth.

6. Bundle Up- Feeling chilled? Instead of turning up the thermostat, throw on a pair of socks or an extra layer. These small choices to not turn up the heat can really add up in energy savings!

7. Switch our Your Lights- From lamps to the Christmas tree, all of your lights can be changed out for energy efficient LED lights! With the sun setting earlier, you’ll be using your indoor lights more often. Also, the festivity of the season’s decorations can spike energy bill. LED Christmas lights can cut back on costs and energy usage.

We hope these tips are helpful as you consider ways to cut down on energy usage and create an eco-friendly environment in your Deep Creek Lake home!  While it may not seem like you’re doing a lot; every little bit helps to keep our environment clean!

If you’d like to learn more about the Deep Creek Lake lifestyle or are interested in viewing some of the homes currently on the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market; please let us know!  We would be happy to meet with you and help you find the home of your dreams on Deep Creek Lake!

Don't Miss these Tips for Buying a Deep Creek Lake Home!

Buying a home on Deep Creek Lake may seem exciting and daunting all at the same time.  While you are looking forward to seeing what homes are on the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market, you also know the wide variety of details that go into buying a home.

As Deep Creek Lake Real Estate agents here at Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty, we want to ensure that your home buying process runs smoothly and that you can find and settle in to the home of your dreams in no time.  We have years of experience working with buyers who want to move to Deep Creek Lake as their permanent home as well as though looking for their ideal vacation property on our beautiful shores.

If you have started looking online at some of the homes currently for sale on Deep Creek Lake; we’re glad you stopped by our blog to learn more about the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate market and our services.  As you continue to pursue buying a Deep Creek Lake home, here are four home buying tips you’ll want to keep in mind throughout the entire process.

1. Do Look at Many Houses Before You Buy- Although you may fall in love with the first Deep Creek Lake home you tour, it’s wise to view other homes in the area.  You never know if the home across the street is more in line with what you’re looking for in a home!  It’s also good to see the comparables to ensure you’re not overpaying for the home.  View at least three houses before making your decision and, if you still are in love with the first Deep Creek Lake home you saw, make an offer!

2. Do Research the Community- Not only do you want to find a Deep Creek Lake home that fits your needs and lifestyle, you’ll want to feel at home in the community as well!  Decide what you would and wouldn’t like to see in the area in which you live, and make finding the right fit in a community a high priority as well.  I’d love to discuss the various areas of Deep Creek Lake with you to determine which fits you best!

3. Do Invest in a Professional Inspection- While you may be trying to cut down on costs; this is one you don’t want to skip!  Sellers may not disclose everything about the home or they may have done a quick cover-up fix to a larger problem in the home.  Have a professional check over every detail of the house could save you thousands of dollars in the long run.  You’ll also feel very comfortable in making your final decision knowing  the condition of the home.

4. Do Buy Based on Needs, Not Wants-  On average, Americans live in a home for nine years, so when thinking long term; it’s best to decide on a Deep Creek Lake home based on your needs.  Some of the items you may want now, such as choosing a gourmet kitchen over square footage, may not be what you need in five years if your family is going to grow.  Make a list of your needs and be sure to follow it to be sure you don’t have buyer’s remorse down the road.

We hope these tips are helpful as you take the next steps in buying a Deep Creek Lake home!  As always, we are here to answer any questions you have and to guide you through the home buying process.

We look forward to hearing from you!
